Our story
We moved in with four kids, plenty of enthusiasm, and almost no practical farm experience.
We did not set out to build a farm. We started with chickens. Then came ducks, goats, pigs, cows, a horse, and a list of projects that never seems to get any shorter. The commute was replaced by feed buckets, river walks, muddy boots, and mornings that are rarely quiet.
There is a lot we love about living here: mushroom circles beneath the old spruce trees, watching the river change through the seasons, fresh eggs, and seeing the kids become more capable and confident. There are also broken fences, chores in terrible weather, escaped animals, and more poop than anyone needs to hear about.
We are learning as we go, and the kids are right in the middle of it with us. They are growing up knowing where food comes from, how to care for animals, and that most worthwhile things take a fair bit of work.

On moving day, two ravens were standing in the driveway. We saw them again the next day, and then most days after that.
They still circle the property, perch near the house, and occasionally accept an egg. When we needed a name for the place, Raven House was the obvious one.
They still need to be fed, watered, checked, and put away. That daily responsibility has been good for all of us.
A late frost, a fence that needs fixing before dark, a sick animal, or a garden that did not go to plan. The farm rarely lets us get too comfortable.
This life is loud, muddy, expensive, and often inconvenient. It is also funny, useful, and very much ours.
A borrowed trailer, eggs left on a doorstep, or someone arriving with a chainsaw after a storm. People still show up for one another here.
It does not need to be precious or perfect. We simply like things that were made by someone who paid attention.
A new calf, the first egg after winter, the river rising, or a raven on the fence post. There is usually something worth stopping for.
